Beer Me

Love of beer exists beyond the pleasures of taste and of mind. It is a commitment to the art, the science, and the passion of its creation. From the lowly piece of barley destined to be malted, to the hops in a boil slowly being isomerized; love of beer is not a hobby, it’s a life choice.

Abbey Belgian Style Ale

Style: Belgian Dubbel
Brewery: New Belgium
Serving Type: Bottle

I thought I might try some Belgian style ale because of my trip in a few weeks although I realize this is not imported. Anyway, I am not impressed with this beer. The nose was interesting, definitely some fruity esters mixed with a caramel, not hoppy at all, but it tastes worse than it smells. Mouthfeel was good although a little thin and it is bottle conditioned and tastes very yeasty to me. I get a little fruitiness in the flavor but that soon falls to a rotting fruit flavor. Definitely some phenol alcohols lending it a little bit of a hot flavor. Do they even use hops in this beer? I think a little more hops could offset the sickly fruit flavor. The aftertaste is a killer. It tastes like sorghum and metal. This beer is not for me.
